The Commodore MAX Machine appeared in Japan in 1982 as a low-cost home system closely related to the forthcoming Commodore 64. It used the MOS 6510 processor, VIC-II graphics and the SID sound chip, but had only 2 KB of RAM and did not include BASIC in ROM. Software was distributed mainly on cartridges, including MAX BASIC, and MAX cartridges could later be used on the Commodore 64 thanks to its Ultimax compatibility mode.
