The Game & Watch series, created by Nintendo under the direction of Gunpei Yokoi and introduced in 1980, was one of the most influential families of handheld electronic video games of its era. Its machines combined an LCD game with a clock and alarm, and their enormous international popularity helped establish the concept of portable video gaming years before the arrival of the Game Boy. Game & Watch Donkey Kong (DK-52) was released by Nintendo in June 1982 as the second model in the Multi Screen series. It adapted the Donkey Kong arcade game to two LCD screens and was the first video game to use the cross-shaped directional pad. This control system, developed during the project led by Gunpei Yokoi, would later be adopted by the Famicom and ultimately become a standard feature of video game controllers.
