View-Master Interactive Vision was introduced in the late 1980s as a children’s system combining VHS tapes with electronic graphics overlaid by the unit. It required an external VHS player: as the recording progressed, the characters asked the child to respond using a controller with a joystick and five coloured buttons. Its catalogue relied on children’s licences such as Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and Disney. Sources place its introduction in 1988 and its US commercial availability around 1988–1989, so it is useful to distinguish the product’s presentation from its actual availability in stores.
