Takara Popira appeared in Japan in 2000 as an unusual Plug & Play system dedicated to music video games. It used four large buttons for following the rhythm of songs and could expand its content through interchangeable cartridges, giving rise to a family later continued by Popira 2, Taiko de Popira and Jumpin' Popira.
