NVIDIA presented Project SHIELD at CES in January 2013 and launched the device, later known as SHIELD Portable, on 31 July. It was the first commercial machine based on NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor and combined a traditional-style controller with a folding 5-inch touch screen at 1280 × 720 resolution. It ran Android, allowing it to use games and applications from that ecosystem, but one of its most distinctive features was the ability to stream over a local network games running on a compatible PC equipped with certain GeForce GTX GPUs. It represented NVIDIA’s direct entry into handheld gaming hardware.
