Nintendo launched Game Boy Pocket in Japan on 21 July 1996 as a redesign of the original Game Boy. It retained compatibility with Game Boy cartridges but considerably reduced the size and weight of the device and replaced the original greenish screen with a more neutral-looking LCD with better contrast. It ran on two AAA batteries instead of the four AA batteries used by the DMG-01 model. It also adopted a smaller Link connector, requiring an adapter to connect it directly to an original Game Boy. It was a revision of the existing platform, not a new software generation.
