Nintendo 64 appeared in Japan in 1996 as the successor to Super Famicom/Super Nintendo and was Nintendo’s first home console designed specifically around three-dimensional graphics. Its architecture, developed together with Silicon Graphics, its analogue control and games such as Super Mario 64 had an enormous influence on the way 3D video games were designed and controlled, while Nintendo retained cartridges as the physical medium throughout the console’s commercial life.
