Cybiko appeared in the United States in 2000 as a handheld device aimed especially at teenagers, combining PDA functions, games and wireless communication. It was initially tested in New York in April and its distribution expanded during May. It incorporated a QWERTY keyboard, monochrome LCD screen and a digital radio system that allowed nearby units to exchange messages and data without relying on a mobile-phone network. Its software included applications and games downloadable from a computer. The concept placed Cybiko somewhere between youth-oriented PDAs and entertainment handhelds in an era before modern smartphones.
