Atari introduced the 5200 in 1982 as its new high-performance console. Its architecture was closely related to Atari’s 8-bit computer family and used the ANTIC and GTIA graphics chips together with the POKEY sound chip. However, it was not directly compatible with Atari 2600 cartridges or with Atari computer software. Its controllers featured an analogue joystick, numeric keypad and side buttons, a highly advanced solution for the time but also one of the system’s most controversial features.
