ZAPiT Games developed Game Wave as a home system combining DVD playback with games designed mainly for groups and families. The console used individual wireless controllers and focused much of its catalogue on quizzes, puzzles and social games, deliberately avoiding direct technical competition with PlayStation 2, Xbox or GameCube. Games were distributed on optical discs and the unit could also function as a DVD player. Game Wave had a limited commercial presence, concentrated particularly in North America, and represented an early approach to the family-entertainment market that would grow during the following years.
