SNK launched the NEOGEO platform in 1990 with the aim of bringing exactly the same technology used in its arcade machines into the home. The home version later received the name AES, Advanced Entertainment System, to distinguish it from the arcade MVS. Both shared an almost identical architecture and equivalent versions of games, and could also use memory cards to transfer progress between certain arcade and home titles. SNK initially distributed the home machine through rental in Japan; general retail sales became established later. The UniBIOS currently installed in this unit is a later modification and was not part of the original 1990 hardware.
