NEC released the PC Engine GT in Japan on 1 December 1990. It was a portable version of the PC Engine capable of running exactly the same HuCards as the home console, without specific conversions. It incorporated a colour LCD screen and retained the platform’s basic architecture, an ambitious technical achievement for a handheld of its time. It ran on six AA batteries and could be expanded with accessories such as the TV Tuner. The ability to use exactly the same games as the home console was a fundamental difference from contemporary handheld systems that required their own software catalogues.
