Intellivision was conceived by Mattel as a technologically ambitious rival to the Atari 2600. It used the General Instrument CP1610 processor, controllers with a directional disc and numeric keypad, and a STIC graphics chip. Its initial launch was limited in 1979, before wider distribution in 1980.
