Cybiko Xtreme appeared in 2001 as an evolution of the original 2000 Cybiko. It retained the concept of a youth-oriented handheld device combining local wireless messaging, games, applications and organiser functions, but revised the design and expanded the hardware capabilities. Its QWERTY keyboard could be used to write messages, and units could communicate directly by radio with other nearby users without using a mobile-phone network. Software was transferred from a computer, and the system developed its own community of applications and games in a period before smartphones became widespread.
