Bandai Digi Casse appeared in Japan in 1984 as a handheld system with interchangeable games. The main unit provided the controls, power supply and physical support, while each cartridge incorporated the LCD screen, graphics, sound and game logic. Changing cartridges therefore meant replacing virtually all of the title-specific electronics. The name derives from “Digital Cassette”. Bandai released eight cartridges, and versions were briefly distributed in Europe years later.
