ATARI XEGS — system in the collection

ATARI XEGS

Atari unveiled the XE Game System at the Winter CES in January 1987 and marketed it that same year as a way of turning its veteran 8-bit computer family into a console. Technically it was very close to the Atari 65XE, with 64 KB of RAM and compatibility with Atari 8-bit software and peripherals. Missile Command was built into ROM and could be started without a cartridge. The keyboard was detachable, allowing the system to be presented as a console or used as a complete home computer. Atari also accompanied it with the XG-1 light gun for compatible games.
